Tzedakah, part II

25/06/2010

Dear Rabbi Simon, A quick question please – does one need to give 10% charity on a cash present one receives, or is the 10% only calculated on earnings? Many thanks, Jeff

Dear Jeff,
Ma'aser should be allocated from cash gifts as well, unless the one who has given the gift specifies that the funs should be used for a particular purpose, e.g. towards the purchase (or maintenance) of a car or a house, to defray the cost of a bar mitzvah, to take your wife out to dinner, etc.

Best wishes
